Questions  And Answers on Taking Antiretrovirals

Is it safe to use alcohol or recreational drugs while you are on antiretroviral therapy?

There is a possibility that antiretroviral medications may interact with alcohol or recreational drugs. For instance, people on ritonavir should avoid taking ecstasy (also known as MDMA), since there has been one fatal case report with this combination. However, most of the possible interactions with recreational drugs have not been studied and are unlikely to be studied. Therefore, it is   suggested that if you choose to drink alcohol or take   recreational drugs, you monitor the effects they have on you by taking a little at a time to see if the effects are stronger or weaker than you are used to.
