Stages of HIV Infection Early Symptomatic HIV InfectionConstitutional complaints of variable severity may be seen
and include: fevers, night sweats, headache, malaise, fatigue,
diarrhea, weight loss (greater or equal to 10 lb over 6-8 weeks), etc. Generalized lymphadenopathy involving extra-inguinal sites may be present during the
asymptomatic and early symptomatic phases. This lymphadenopathy does not predict disease progression. Several dermatologic conditions may be seen, including: Herpes zoster virus (shingles)
Herpes simplex virus
oral hairy leukoplakia seborrheic dermatitis
bacterial infections
- folliculitis
- Those who have a CD count > 500 cells/mm3 have less than a 5% chance of developing AIDS within the next
18-24 months. Lymphocyte profiles and routine blood work is followed and symptoms are managed.
