WHY is this medication prescribed ?
Nystatin is used to prevent and treat fungal infections of the mouth (thrush).
HOW should this drug be taken?
Nystatin is available as a 100 000 unit/mL oral suspension. The dose most commonly used is 500 000 units (= 5 mL or 1 teaspoonful) 4 times a day
. The suspension should be swished & held in your mouth for several minutes before swallowing.
Shake the bottle well before each use to mix the medication evenly.

What should you do if you FORGET a dose?
The missed dose should be taken as soon as you remember, then return to your regular dosing schedule. If you skip a
dose (i.e. don't remember until the next dose is due), do not double the next dose. If you are unsure, please consult your doctor or pharmacist.
What ADVERSE EFFECTS can this drug cause? What should you do about them?
Although nystatin is relatively well tolerated and side effects are not common, they can occur. The following side effects
have been reported with nystatin oral suspension: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach upset and stomach pain.
If you are concerned about any unexpected effects, please talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

What other PRECAUTIONS should you follow while using this drug?
Do not eat or drink anything for 20 minutes after using nystatin oral suspension in order to increase contact time with the mouth surface.
Although the symptoms of your mouth infection may improve within one to three days, make sure you continue to take
nystatin for the full duration prescribed by your doctor. Failure to do so can allow the infection to return.
How should this medication be STORED?
Nystatin oral suspension should be stored at room temperature in a cool (15-30C) dry place, protected from light and well
out of the reach of children. Do not store medications in your bathroom. Heat and moisture may cause medications to lose its effectiveness.
