NABILONE

Other names: Cesamet®

WHY is this medication prescribed ?

Nabilone is a narcotic medication used to treat severe nausea and vomiting. Occasionally, it is also used to help improve appetite.

HOW should this drug be taken ?

Nabilone comes as 1 mg blue and white pulvules. The usual dosage of nabilone is 1 to 2 mg twice a day. Since each person responds differently to medical treatments, your doctor will recommend the dose and duration of therapy that is best for you.

Nabilone can be taken with or without food.

What should you do if you FORGET a dose?

If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is close to the time of the next dose. Do not double the dose, just carry on with your regular dosing schedule. Always check to ensure that the drug has not expired before using it, especially if you have missed a dose.

What ADVERSE EFFECTS can this drug cause ? What should you do about them?

Unsteadiness, difficulty concentrating, dizziness, drowsiness, dryness of the mouth, and/or headache can commonly occur. Changes in vision, loss of appetite, muscle pain or weakness occur rarely.

These effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. However, check with your doctor if any of these effects continue or become bothersome.

Inform your doctor immediately if any of the following effects occur: changes in mood, confusion, difficulty breathing, fainting, irregular heartbeat, hallucinations and increased blood pressure as they may indicated an overdose.

IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU KEEP YOUR DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS, SO THAT YOUR PROGRESS CAN BE ASSESSED REGULARLY.

IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING ANY ADVERSE EFFECTS, PLEASE DISCUSS THEM WITH YOUR HEALTH CARE TEAM.

What other PRECAUTIONS should you follow while using this drug ?

As this medication may cause some people to become dizzy, drowsy or less alert than normal, you should make sure you know how you react to this medicine before you drive, use machinery or do anything else that could be dangerous if you are dizzy or are not alert.

Nabilone will add to the effects of alcohol and other central nervous system depressants such as sedatives, muscle relaxants, narcotics, medicines for seizures and antihistamines. Check with your doctor before taking any of the above while taking nabilone.

Nabilone may cause dryness of the mouth. For temporary relief, sugarless candy or gum, ice or saliva substitutes may be used.

How should this medication be STORED?

Store nabilone at room temperature (2-30° C). Do not store in your bathroom or kitchen as heat and moisture may cause the medication to lose potency.

KEEP THIS AND ANY OTHER DRUGS OUT OF SIGHT AND OUT OF REACH FROM CHILDREN. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE AFTER THE EXPIRY DATE ("EXP") shown on the outside of the package.

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS ABOUT THIS MEDICATION, PLEASE DISCUSS THEM WITH YOUR PHARMACIST OR PHYSICIAN OR NURSE.
