In contrast to delavirdine, nevirapine and efavirenz are both potent CYP inducers, and may adversely affect protease inhibitor concentrations. In such cases, options include:

• increasing the protease inhibitor dosage (NB: extra cost and inconvenience of additional pills)

• switching from one protease inhibitor to another (e.g., switching from saquinavir to a PI whose levels are not as adversely affected)

• switching from one NNRTI to another (e.g., substituting delavirdine for nevirapine or efavirenz)
