ETHAMBUTOL

Other names: Myambutol®

WHY is this medication prescribed ?

Ethambutol (e tham' byoo tole) can be used with other medications to treat infections such as tuberculosis (TB) or Mycobacterium Avium Intracellulare (MAI or MAC).

HOW should this drug be taken?

Ethambutol must be taken regularly, as prescribed by your physician. Take it at the same time each day. Missing doses of the drug can allow more resistant bacteria to grow.

Complete the full prescribed course of treatment (or the full course recommended on the labelling of non-prescription products), even if you feel better earlier. If the drug is stopped too quickly, your infection may return.

Your dose is once a day.

What should you do if you FORGET a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If you remember at the time to take the next dose, take only the regularly scheduled dose. Do not double the dose.

What ADVERSE EFFECTS can this drug cause? What should you do about them?

Ethambutol can cause nausea or vomiting, especially when it is first started. If nausea or vomiting continues, talk with your doctor.

Changes in vision,like blurring, and colour changes can occur. Be careful if you are driving or using machinery. Your doctor will examine your eyes regularly while you are taking Ethambutol. Notify your doctor immediately if you notice anything.

If you notice a rash or itching, or tingling in the hands or feet, contact your doctor.

What other PRECAUTIONS should you follow while using this drug?·

Tell your doctor if you have any kidney or liver disease.

  • Do not take antacid medication within 2 hours of Ethambutol.
  • Do not share your medication with anyone else.

How should this medication be STORED?

Keep Ethambutol in its original container. Store this in a cool, dry area.
